Windrush Day is an opportunity for all Christians in Britain and Ireland to celebrate the humungous contributions that those hailing from the Caribbean have made to churches on these shores. Indeed, Windrush Day is a celebration of the Windrush generation, the men, women and children who came to these shores from 1948 to 1972, and the way they have transformed life in Britain and Ireland in so many positive ways. Various historians and scholars have revealed how these folks have breathed new energy into the spiritual life of the Church. Windrush Day is also a celebration of all those who continue to make their homes on these shores, and are now mainstays of the Church.

Immigration and asylum have become major public-policy issues in both Britain and Ireland, invariably characterised by a toxicity of discourse. However, the movement of people – going from one place to another for a variety of reasons – is a common characteristic in the Bible – in both the Old and New Testament. What is more, God invariably encourages his people to be hospitable to those who are ‘strangers’ or ‘travellers’. If that is God’s attitude, what should be ours regarding asylum seekers, and those looking to start a new life on these shores?
