Windrush Sunday 2026

Introduction

Windrush Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the contributions that those hailing from the Caribbean have made to churches on these shores. It is a celebration of the Windrush generation, the men, women and children who came to these shores from 1948 to 1972, and the way they have transformed life in Britain and Ireland in so many positive ways.

Churches are encouraged to take part in events to mark Windrush Sunday – Sunday 21 June 2026. However, any suitable date this year can also be used to mark this occasion.

Resources are available below for the 78th anniversary of Windrush. Last year’s resources should also prove useful and include a sermon, reflection, prayers, Bible readings and songs.

What you can do for Windrush Sunday

• Churches can hold a service which both celebrates and reflects on the impact of Windrush.
• Hold group discussions which allow older worshippers to tell their stories of this era. It would be useful to hear the stories of older Caribbean people (if they are in the congregation) on arriving to these shores, and to hear from those who ‘welcomed’ them.
• Provide a space where your congregation can talk about the impact of the Windrush on these shores, and the Church in particular.
• Use a Book Club or a Study Group to read one of the many books listed in the ‘Resources’ section to find out more about Windrush.
• Listen to records by Calypsonians such as Lord Kitchener or Lord Beginner which explore the lives of the new settlers.
