This year marks the 39th anniversary of Black History Month (BHM) in Britain. BHM provides an opportunity to recognise, celebrate, and better understand the contributions, experiences and history of Black people in Britain. There is little doubt that their stories have often been overlooked in mainstream education.
From a Christian perspective, BHM is an excellent way of celebrating the way God has enabled Black women, men and children to use their God-given giftings to revitalise the Church in this country. Much like Britain and Ireland per se, the Church is a better place because of the contributions of Black people.
Also, what may have been the preserve of Black communities, is now the property of all communities. While BHM naturally resonates with Black communities, it undoubtedly belongs to everyone because it is British history, rather than a separate topic, and as such, all should participate in this month-long activity. What’s more, those topics and themes explored in BHM can be also be studied throughout the year; there’s no reason to limit your interest in this subject to just one month!
