Racial Justice Sunday Service at St Mary’s Church, High Halden

March 7, 2025

Revd Maria Stuttaford, Curate, Parish of Denswood, reports on how St Mary’s Church, High Halden, marked Racial Justice Sunday.

We incorporated Racial Justice Sunday in our February Parish Magazine, using the theme and artwork of Coat of Many Colours in our monthly letter from the ministry team.

We marked Racial Justice on the 16th February 2025, using the Church of England lectionary for the Sunday which included the Beatitudes. The artist Laura James kindly gave permission for us to copy and distribute her painting ‘A Sermon for Our Ancestors’.

highlight the ongoing importance of taking greater action on racial justice in our church, community and world

We had special prayers of penitence, a Collect and intercessions for Racial Justice Sunday, as well as specifically chosen hymns.

With minimal resources we adapted an existing service to highlight the ongoing importance of taking greater action on racial justice in our church, community and world. The emphasis was on asking people to reflect on what we can each do, to live in mutually inclusive relationships. To step out of our human blessed happy lives, and humbly ask to learn from people whose joy is from God.

Laura James’ art challenges and inspires us to be on an equitable plain and challenges and inspires us to identify what we need to do to sew a coat of many colours in our Parish.
