Following the visit by the World Council of Churches (WCC), the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe (CCME) to Hungary, WCC general secretary, Rev Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, stated: ‘This is much more than a refugee crisis in Europe. We need an international solution to the refugee crisis. We call for an international solution now!’
Doris Peschke, general secretary of the CCME, said, ‘The basic fact is of human beings in need. Hungary and the EU were not mentally prepared. We have to prepare for next 10 to 15 years and discuss the role of the churches. How do we work integrating refugees into European society? How can we learn from others?’
Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit stressed that it is ‘absolutely and critically necessary that all European states take their proper responsibility in terms of reception and support for people seeking refuge, safety and a better future for themselves and their families. This cannot be left only to the states where they enter first.’
