Following a consultation of 35 bishops and Church leaders from 20 countries, on 29 October 2015, to discuss the international refugee crisis, the World Council of Churches (WCC) has released a video (above) of the post-consultation press conference.
The leaders discussed the role of the churches in Europe and called for safe passage for those seeking refuge.
‘It is extremely important that we as a fellowship of churches in Europe and beyond get together and reflect what more can we do than we’re already doing,’ said Rev Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, the General Secretary of the WCC.
‘We believe there is a great need for stronger co-ordination but also huge potential in how the churches can bring both the practical work they are doing helping the refugees… but also how do we bring the voices together for a stronger voice to say this isn’t about figures, this is about human beings; this isn’t about a group of muslims or group of this or that, these are our fellow human beings who have the human rights to seek asylum when they are having to flee their homes in a situation of war. The European countries have not lived up to their commitments in the Geneva Conventions.’
