Five UK churches have issued a statement supporting those meeting in New York to negotiate a treaty to ban nuclear weapons.
The churches say that ‘the possession and threat of use of nuclear weapons is a sin against God and humanity’.
The Baptist Union of Great Britain, Church of Scotland, Methodist Church in Britain, Quakers in Britain and the United Reformed Church (URC) have also expressed their disappointment that the UK Government has refused to take part in these talks, despite a longstanding international commitment to work towards a nuclear weapon free world.
Britain, the US and most of the other countries possessing nuclear weapons, including Russia, are opposing the talks, as reported by the New York Times. The UN talks are supported by more than 120 countries, including Ireland.
